Adriel Carrion Recalls Awkward Moment with Katy Perry on American Idol

Adriel Carrion, an American Idol alum from season 19, recently recalled an awkward moment with fellow judge Katy Perry that still haunts him to this day.[0] At Hollywood Week, Katy Perry, 38, stopped Carrion and Anthony Guzman from performing Harry Styles' hit song, “Not ‘Watermelon Sugar' … I can’t take another ‘Watermelon Sugar,'” exclaiming, “I can’t take another ‘Watermelon Sugar,'”[0]

The camera shifted its focus to the two singers, who each worked hard to conceal the disappointment in their expressions.[1] “Is this ‘Watermelon Sugar?'”[0] Guzman queued the band as Perry quipped.[1] “It’s the way that it has been three years and I’m still traumatized by this moment,”[1]

Once the video concluded, Carrion displayed his current sentiment.[1] “I could be getting my beauty rest and all I hear in my nightmare is, ‘Not Watermelon Sugar.'” he jokingly said.[2] All I hear in my nightmare, preventing me from getting my beauty rest, is, ‘Not Watermelon Sugar.'[0]

Katy Perry, the popular singer, has teamed up with country star Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning musician Lionel Richie to be the judges for the 21st edition of American Idol, which is being broadcast on ABC every Sunday at 8 pm ET.[0] In 2020, Perry seized the moment to clarify the exact lyrics to “Firework” when Bryan sang them incorrectly on an “Idol” episode.[3]

Earlier this month, contestant Caroline Kole lights up the room by auditioning with one of Katy Perry’s most iconic songs – “Firework,” the hit single off her 2010 album “Teenage Dream.”[3] Kole's performance of Perry's popular empowerment anthem was accepted by Perry when Kole offered it.[4] Kole strummed her acoustic guitar and sang the chorus, and Perry joined in, creating an unexpected duet for their audition.[4]

As soon as the song ended, Kole exclaimed, “That's the coolest thing that's ever happened in my entire life,”[4] Beaming from ear to ear, Perry seemed to savor the compliment.[4] When “Firework” released in 2010, it stayed at the top spot for four weeks.[4] The renowned pop singer has been streamed an impressive number of times throughout the years, and 35 of their songs have made it onto Billboard's Top 100.[4]
