Glen Powell in Talks to Star in “Twisters” Sequel Alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones

Glen Powell is in talks to star in the upcoming sequel to 1996's “Twister,” titled “Twisters,” opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones.[0] The film is set to be directed by Lee Isaac Chung and produced by Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley of the Kennedy/Marshall Company. The screenplay will be written by Mark L. Smith.[1] The film is co-financed by Warner Bros.[2] Pictures and is set to be overseen for Universal Pictures by executive VP of production Sara Scott, creative executive Jacqueline Garell, and Ashley Jay Sandberg.[3]

Powell's role in the film has not yet been revealed, but the actor has been on a hot streak since his breakout role in “Top Gun: Maverick.”[4] He also recently co-starred in and executive produced the historical war epic “Devotion” and is set to star in the upcoming action-comedy “Hitman” from Richard Linklater, which he also co-produced and co-wrote with Linklater.[2] Additionally, Powell will team up with Chris Morgan in the sci-fi action thriller “Deputy X” for Universal and star with Nick Jonas in the buddy comedy “Foreign Relations.”[4] He is currently in production on Sony's untitled Will Gluck rom-com alongside “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney.[4]

“Twister” starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Carey Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman and made nearly $500 million at the box office.[4] The film received Oscar nominations in the visual effects and sound categories and was the first-ever movie to be released on DVD in the United States.[1] The original film was directed by Jan De Bont and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Michael Crichton.[4]

While there were initially rumors that Helen Hunt would reprise her role for the sequel, it has since been reported that “Twisters” will not bring back old characters and will instead serve as a new chapter.[2] Edgar-Jones will play a former storm chaser who, after surviving a disastrous tornado encounter, now works a desk job but is soon forced to go out into the breach once more.[1] It's likely that Powell and Edgar-Jones will fill similar roles to Hunt and Paxton's characters in the original film, with a dynamic that sees them initially estranged but drawn together by the events of the movie.[5]

With production likely to begin in the near future, “Twisters” is shaping up to be a dedicated yet different-feeling sequel to the original film, with a new cast and crew bringing their own unique vision to the storm-chasing thriller.[5]
