Harrison Ford Receives Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes for Final Indiana Jones Film Premiere

Harrison Ford made an emotional appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, where he received an honorary Palme d'Or ahead of the premiere of his latest film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.[0] Accepting a special award from Cannes director Iris Knobloch, the seasoned actor was visibly emotional as he received a standing ovation.[0] Ford has reprised his role as Indiana Jones for the final time, after first taking on the iconic character in 1981 in Raiders of the Lost Ark.[1]

Directed by James Mangold, the film is the first Indiana Jones movie not to be directed by Steven Spielberg, who handed the reins over to Mangold.[2] Recently, Spielberg disclosed that he had already viewed Mangold's work and shared his opinion.[3] The movie also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, and Boyd Holbrook.[4]

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and the first reactions have already hit the internet.[5] Despite the fact that there is still over a month left until the general audience can witness Harrison Ford's concluding chapter of Indy's story, early reactions indicate that it will be well worth the anticipation.[5]

A tribute reel was created by the festival, which started with a French twist. A young Ford was featured in the reel, explaining how he was meant to play the lead role in the 1969 drama The Model Shop, directed by iconic French director Jacques Demy, and starring Anouk Aimee, set in Los Angeles.[6] But cast instead was Gary Lockwood, an actor hot off co-starring in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.[6] “I never saw it, but I heard it was good,” Ford said.[6]

Although Ford was clearly emotional about the award, he humbly accepted the accolade with thanks to his audience who have been with him through his career, before quipping that he had a movie to show.[5] It is said that before you pass away, your entire life appears in front of your eyes.[7] In response to the sizzle reel of his cinematic career, Ford stated during his acceptance speech that his life had just flashed before his eyes.[8] “A great part of my life, not all of it.”

Ford’s overwhelmed reaction to the standing ovation is a testament to his impact as an actor and his iconic role as Indiana Jones. At 80, he remains the ultimate movie star and this final turn as Indy is a beautiful elegy with lots of nostalgia and surprises attached.[6]

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 30, and Ford has stressed that this will be the end of his tenure playing Indiana Jones.[7] He told Total Film magazine, “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. It is my expectation that this will be his final appearance in a movie.
