Katy Perry Performs at King Charles III’s Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle
Katy Perry was one of the headlining performers at King Charles III's coronation concert at Windsor Castle on May 7.[0] Alongside fellow American Idol judge Lionel Richie, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and British pop group Take That, Perry took to the stage to celebrate the coronation of the new king. The concert also featured a specially created Coronation Choir made up of 300 singers from across the UK.[1] The event was hosted by actor Hugh Bonneville and attended by members of the royal family, including Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their children.[0]
Perry, who is known for her philanthropy, was noted by the royal family for her charity work, specifically her time as a global ambassador for UNICEF.[2] She is also an ambassador for the British Asian Trust, which was founded by Charles in 2007. The new king has a unique connection to Lionel Richie, who was appointed the First Global Ambassador and the First Chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for the Prince's Trust, Charles' charity, in 2019.[2]
Perry's appearance at the coronation ceremony was not without incident.[3] Video footage of the star struggling to find her seat at Westminster Abbey before the coronation went viral on social media.[4] However, Perry eventually found her seat and even made light of the situation on Twitter.[5]
The coronation concert, which was broadcast live on BBC television and radio stations, brought an eclectic mix of entertainers to the stage, ranging from pop stars to opera singers. Perry performed orchestral versions of her hits “Roar” and “Firework.”[6] Bocelli performed a duet with Welsh singer Bryn Terfel, singing the emotional anthem “You'll Never Walk Alone,” which was a special request from the new king and queen consort.[7]
Overall, the concert aimed to “celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen in front of 20,000 members of the public and invited guests.”[8] It was the first coronation in the social media age and featured an emoji modeled after St. Edward’s Crown.[2] Perry and Richie couldn't perform their duties as American Idol judges that night, but they did make a pre-taped appearance on the show to explain their absence and even brought back a souvenir for the show: the newly crowned King and Queen.[1]
