Singer Aaron Carter’s Cause of Death Revealed: Drowning Due to Gas Inhalation and Alprazolam Overdose

The cause of death for singer Aaron Carter has been revealed as drowning due to the effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam, according to an autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.[0] The report states that Carter became incapacitated while in the bathtub due to the effects of inhaling compressed gas and taking alprazolam, which resulted in him becoming submerged under water and unable to breathe.[1] The cause of death was determined to be accidental.[2] Carter, who was 34 years old at the time of his death, had a history of substance abuse and mental health issues.[2]

Carter's music career started at age nine with his debut album “Aaron Carter” in 1997 and continued into the early 2000s. He also appeared on reality television shows such as House of Carters and Dancing with the Stars.[3] Carter's death was discovered by a house sitter in his home in Lancaster, California on November 5, 2022, with prescription pills and drug paraphernalia found in his bedroom.

Surviving Carter is his one-year-old son, Prince, who he had with partner Melanie Martin.[4] Carter's twin sister Angel Carter also mourned his loss on Instagram, sharing throwback family photos and promising to cherish memories of her “funny, sweet Aaron.”

Difluoroethane, the gas found in Carter's system, is commonly used as a propellant in air spray cleaners for electronic devices and can induce feelings of euphoria when inhaled.[5] It can also lead to cardiac arrest.[6] Alprazolam, on the other hand, is a benzodiazepine that can cause drowsiness and sedation.[7]

Carter's mother, Jane Carter, had previously refused to believe that her son died of an accidental overdose and urged for a “real investigation” into his death.[5] She claimed that his addiction past prevented law enforcement from investigating his death as a possible crime scene.[8]

Carter's death sparked tributes from his brother Nick Carter and his former bandmates in the Backstreet Boys, who honored him at a performance in London with a photo on the Jumbotron and the caption “Aaron Carter 1987-2022.[9]
